Only three years after Wilson's book was published, three Italian neuroscientists (Vittorio Gallese, Giacomo Rizzolatti, and Leonardo Fogassi) accidentally discovered something that could prove to be the scientific credence Wilson was looking for. During a study of monkey neurons and how they discharge while performing goal-related hand actions like picking up peanuts, the scientists found that the neurons also charged when the monkey observed one of the scientists performing the same action. After further studies, the scientists concluded that "to perceive an action is equivalent to internally simulating it. This enables the observer to use her/his own resources to experientially penetrate the world of the other by means of a direct, automatic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and unconscious process of simulation." They called the responsible neurons "mirror neurons," and extended their studies to explore the same phenomenon related to emotions. Does this mean that mirror neurons and the resulting capability for empathy are, in some small part,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the underpinning of our "moral sense"? Even if this is so--there must be more to learn. As human beings, our abilities to apply empathy go far beyond that of a monkey. While monkeys seem able to anticipate or empathize with "motor" activities that they themselves have experienced, human beings are capable in varying degrees of empathizing with others who experience things they themselves have not.
Scanning the past week's news,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one gets the distinct impression there has been an unusually high number of "man's inhumanity to man" stories. Darfur,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Iraq, Lebanon, Israel. Kidnapped children, boys arrested for planning an attack on their school, and a murdered family in a Dallas suburb. A familiar question tugs at the edges of consciousness when we begin to feel the human experience is laden with these kinds of stories. Does the fact that there is so much cruelty to report speak to the lack of morality in human nature, or conversely to the presence of a moral conscience of some sort? This intriguing question was addressed by James Q. Wilson in his 1993 book, The Moral Sense,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it deserves revisiting in the light of more current understanding.
Other cognitive scientists have carried these studies even further and found that the mechanisms related to mirror neurons seem to be defective in autism--thus explaining the social impairments of people with that pathology.
If man's inhumanity to man is a reflection of his mirror neurons and a somehow impaired ability to empathize, there may still be hope for change. Neuroscientists now know that the brain is capable of developing new neurons at any age--a process known as "neurogenesis." But the brain's plasticity is notable even in the absence of neurogenesis. Jeffrey Schwartz of UCLA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for example, has had considerable success in treating OCD patients by establishing new patterns of behavior to replace old ones, thereby creating new connections between existing neurons.

The first is that they are unusual. His book presents some very convincing arguments and is not devoid of science, but his problem, he admitted, was in finding hard scientific evidence to prove the existence of this "sense."
Does this mean "old dogs" can be taught "new tricks"? Could new patterns of moral behavior encourage the development of new neurons, even of new "mirror" neurons? If so, maybe it's time to think about which new behaviors might best replace the old. If not--we should simply resign ourselves to the status quo and ignore whatever feelings of disgust may be awakened by the inevitable headlines on CNN.
I say "in varying degrees" because there are obviously those amongst us whose abilities to empathize are impaired, even if not to the same degree as autistics. And this brings us back to the week's news.

Ask for what you want and need. You give a great gift to the other by asking for what you really want. Many are afraid to ask for fear that if they let their partner know what they really want, they could be turned down. It requires the willingness to be open and vulnerable. Ask for what you want and what is important to you. You will be amazed at the fact that very often your partner had no idea.
Once you ask for what you want, allow yourself to receive it, and offer thanks. Many people take what is given without offering thanks, gratitude and acknowledgment of how much the gift meant to them. This leaves the giver feeling upset. Make sure you fully let your partner know how much the gift meant to you.
The heart and soul of intimacy begins with communication. However, few really know how to listen, or how to find the right time or way to express what is inside. We usually think the person already knows what is good about them, but actually this is rarely so. It is crucial to "acknowledge" what is happening. Open up and tell them how they made you happy, or what about them you enjoy and respect. (This also lets our partner know what pleases and is meaningful to us).

True emotional intimacy begins with willingness to be who you are - to express yourself honestly and fully and to know that your partner is able to accept you as you are. You fell in love with your partner for some reason. Focus upon what it is that drew you to them, the things they've done that make you happy. Then, tell them so. To practice this exercise - clear you mind and focus only upon your partner and what he is saying to you. Do not think of an answer, do not think of anything. Listen carefully and then at the right moment, paraphrase what he said to you, just so he knows you are with him and have heard what he said. For example, you could say, I heard you say that you feel you need more space. Don't comment upon this, analyze it, or anything. Just let him know he's been heard. Although these steps are simple they are extremely powerful. Try one today and see. If you do them day after day, it is impossible not to find the bond deepening naturally.

2. BUG SPRAY. They say that where there is one ant there are many more nearby. I have found that once my “worry glands” get activated there are other worries that begin pouring in. I had been using Facebook messaging to keep in touch with Joseph nearly every day! Then for 6 days after Christmas we heard nothing. During that time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], other bugs and worries popped up. Things like my relationship with family members, my housework, my office work etc. My worries snowballed and rolled down the mountain of my mind. Finally one morning I sat down and wrote all the bugs and worries I could think of then decided whether they were things I had total,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], partial or no control. After that I was able to prayerfully give them to the Lord or do something to resolve the worry/bug.

3. FRIEND THERAPY. Sometimes paperwork wasn’t enough and I had to find someone to brainstorm with. In my iPhone I have a list of people I can do this with. I labeled it “friend therapy” and included the names of people I felt I could confide in, brainstorm with etc. Often a friend can shed light and hope on a fearful situation.
4. QUOTE POWER. My friend, Darla,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], helped me come up with a list of quotes that soothed and calmed my soul.

I used to believe that I was like the engine of our family train. I mistakenly thought that my husband and children were attached to me and that it was my responsibility to pull them all back to heaven. I now believe that after baptism we each have our own tracks to run on. The Savior is my engine and it is up to me to stay attached to Him. In this way I can listen to His spirit and keep on moving forward, calling encouragement to my husband and children and giving help when directed by Him.
6. SAVIOR SAUVE. Darla told me about a Bishop who was very worried about the members of his ward. After much prayer and pleading with the Lord he was reminded that the Lord is aware of each person’s situation and was in the business of saving,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He could do his best then leave them in the hands of the Lord. I could do the same with my worries.
7. LIFE LIFT. James Jones tells the story of his relationship with his rebellious son and how he finally was able to turn his son over to the Lord and admit to him “This is your life” then stop trying to take it over.

Okay, I admit it. Worrying comes natural for me. In fact I will actually admit that at times I am addicted. When I became a parent then a grandparent my worrying accelerated. When my little ones lay cuddled in the warmth of blankets. I worried that they might suffocate. It continued when they went to school for the first time (all 5 of them.) . I would worry about whether the other kids would be nice or if my child would be a social outcast. On and on it went through the teen years and into adulthood.
Recently I became a worry wart when our soldier son who is serving in Afghanistan called to say he had hurt his back and ribs and was in a medical tent facility scheduled to come home. “Oh no” I thought “what if his injury is permanent? What if it is disabling? What if our 22 year old son comes home to live forever?”
Worry was my constant companion that day. Finally I got out my “Worry Wart” first-aid ideas and started to apply them.
1. WORSE TO WORSE WRAP. I find it helpful to ask myself how I could survive if worse came to worse. I got out a paper and faced the possibility of having him come home disabled for life. I wrote what life might be like and included a list of the positive and negative experiences I might have if that were the case. As usual I found that if that was supposed to be part of my life journey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], God would help me. Like Nephi said “I will go and do the things which the Lord commandeth for He giveth no commandments unto the children of men save he prepareth a way for them to accomplish the thing which he commandeth.” As I faced the possibility I thought of the help our family and our ward would give and I felt greater peace.
Our Son is still in Afghanistan. We still don’t know the extent of his injuries or when or if we will see him next. But instead of feeling a source of fear, I feel trust. I recall Nephi when he crept into the city to get the plates not knowing how this was to be done; only knowing that he had a work to do.
As we move forward in this experience and others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we don’t know how this is to be done or if he will heal there in Afghanistan and resume his work. By the grace of God when faith replaces worry I am able to move forward (at least for this moment in the year 2012!)
